Your True North: Defining Your Why, Core Values, Vision & Mission

How often do you think about the foundation on which your business is built?

If you're like many ambitious business owners, you might get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily tasks that you forget to revisit the essential elements that make your business feel fulfilling and worth pursuing in the first place. We’re talking about your why, core values, vision and mission, which together act as the heart and soul of your entrepreneurial endeavour.

In this blog post we’re exploring how this foundational quartet shape everything you do, from your offerings and messaging to your decisions and actions. By understanding the importance and also the difference between these four elements, you'll be able to gain immense clarity behind why you do what you do, feel more aligned in your daily actions and subsequently unlock the true potential of your business.

The importance of a strong foundation

Your why, core values, vision and mission are like the North Star of your business. They provide direction, help keep you on track and act as a guiding light that you can come back to anytime you’re feeling lost or uncertain.

When you have a clear and sturdy foundation in your business it becomes much easier to live your purpose, prioritize your inner-peace and produce a bountiful profit because you’re able to make decisions and take action towards what matters most.

Whether you’re an established business owner or just starting out, it’s never too late to define or update your why, core values, vision and mission. I actually suggest revisiting them a few times a year and editing them as you and your business grow and evolve.

So, let’s dig a little deeper into these four elements, identify the differences between each one, along with some examples and how-to’s to help bring these concepts to life.

Uncover Your Why

Your why is the driving force behind your business - the deep-rooted reason that fuels your passion, motivation, commitment and makes you excited to jump out of bed each morning.

It's the powerful answer to the question: Why do you do what you do?

Your why is unique to you, can be simple or elaborate, and can include both internal and external motivations. The most important thing is that it’s an authentic expression of YOUR true desires, values and aspirations.

Example of a Why

Meet “Emma”, an Interior Designer extraordinaire. Here she shares her why which includes both internal and external motivations:

“My why is to transform spaces and touch lives, one design at a time. I'm driven by an internal love for beauty and creativity, finding immense joy in curating spaces that reflect my clients' personalities and aspirations. But it doesn't stop there.

I believe that the spaces we inhabit have the power to shape our well-being and happiness. By crafting thoughtfully designed environments, I aim to create a ripple effect of positivity, nurturing connections, inspiring productivity and fostering precious memories.

My why is the heartbeat behind every design choice I make, igniting a sense of joy, comfort and transformation in the lives of those I serve. Together, let's turn houses into homes that radiate love and inspire a life well-lived.”

How to Uncover Your Why:

  1. Start at the Beginning: When you think back to why you decided to start your business in the first place, what comes to mind? What makes you excited to wake up and jump out of bed every morning?

  2. Reflect on Your Passion: Think about what truly lights you up and brings you joy. Consider the activities or causes that ignite a fire within you. How are these connected to your business?

  3. Identify Your Impact: Reflect on the impact you want to make in the lives of others or in the world. What positive change do you aspire to create through your business?

Discover Your Core Values

Core values are the fundamental beliefs and principles that define who you are at your core. They are the compass that guides all of your decisions, actions and interactions. One thing to note is that you can have specific core values for different aspects of your life, such as: business, parenting, spirituality, etc.

Identifying your business core values is essential for building a business that truly reflects your authentic self, feels fulfilling and creates genuine connections with your ideal customers and clients.

Example Core Values

Here are some examples of Emma the Interior Designer’s core values:

  1. Creativity: I value embracing and nurturing creativity in every aspect of my business. I believe that innovative thinking and outside-the-box solutions are the keys to crafting unique and extraordinary designs that leave a lasting impression.

  2. Authenticity: I prioritize authenticity in all my interactions, designs and business practices. I believe in being true to myself and my clients, fostering genuine connections and creating spaces that authentically reflect the personalities and aspirations of those who inhabit them.

  3. Excellence: I am committed to delivering excellence in every project I undertake. I strive for meticulous attention to detail, impeccable craftsmanship and unparalleled quality in all aspects of my work. I believe that going above and beyond expectations is the hallmark of a truly exceptional experience.

  4. Collaboration: I value collaboration and believe in the power of teamwork. I actively engage with my clients, listening attentively to their needs and visions and working together to create spaces that surpass their expectations. I also foster partnerships with trusted suppliers and professionals, knowing that the best results are achieved through a collective effort.

  5. Sustainability: I am dedicated to sustainable design practices that minimize environmental impact. I prioritize sourcing eco-friendly materials, implementing energy-efficient solutions, and promoting sustainable lifestyles. I believe that beautiful design can coexist with conscious choices, creating a better future for both our clients and the planet.

How to Discover Your Core Values:

  • List Your Values: Make a list of 5-10 core values that you feel are important in your business. Feel free to draw inspiration from the examples listed above. From that list, select your top 5 core values.

  • Define Your Values: For each selected value, reflect on why it’s significant to you and write a brief description of what it means to you.

Define Your Vision and Mission

Your vision statement is like a lighthouse, shining a bright light on the destination you want your business to reach. It captures the essence of your dreams, aspirations and the impact you want to make in the world. It's your chance to dream big and envision the incredible future you're working towards.

Your mission statement is the action-packed partner to your vision statement. Your mission statement is all about rolling up your sleeves and making things happen. It's a concise declaration of your purpose, the specific problems you're solving and the unique value you bring to the table.

A vision statement can be considered the “What” while a mission statement outlines the “How”.

Example Vision and Mission Statements

Here are Emma’s vision and mission statements:

Vision statement:

“To create transformative spaces that inspire, nurture and elevate lives, leaving an indelible mark on the world of design. I envision a future where every space we touch becomes a sanctuary of beauty, comfort and connection, empowering individuals to thrive and embrace their fullest potential. Together, let's build a world where exceptional design is a catalyst for personal growth, happiness and meaningful experiences.”

Mission Statement:

“My mission is to craft thoughtfully designed environments that reflect the unique identities and aspirations of my clients, while prioritizing their well-being and sustainability. Through collaborative partnerships and an unwavering commitment to excellence, I aim to exceed expectations, delivering exceptional designs that inspire joy, ignite creativity and foster a sense of belonging. With a passion for authenticity and an unwavering dedication to innovative solutions, I strive to transform spaces into soulful havens, creating lasting impressions and enriching lives, one design at a time.”

How to Define Your Vision and Mission Statements:

  • Brainstorm: Looking back at the theme’s that have come up so far in your why and core values, brainstorm words and messaging around your vision and mission statements. Let your thoughts flow freely and play around with a few rough drafts. Don't filter or judge them at this stage. Afterward, review your ideas and refine them into clear and concise vision and mission statements.

  • Craft your vision statement: Using your reflections and envisioned future, distil your vision into a concise, inspiring statement. Make it vivid, impactful and aligned with your core values. Let it serve as a source of motivation and inspiration for your entrepreneurial journey.

  • Define your mission statement: Based on your passion, purpose and ideal clients, articulate your mission in a clear and concise manner. Describe how you intend to serve your customers and the unique value you provide. Make it actionable, specific and aligned with your strengths and skills.
